When I told my son that I couldn’t fix his toy, he pushed me aside, grabbed the stool, found his way into a drawer with a screwdriver, and went to work.
He didn’t fix the toy, of course, but he managed to express his lack of confidence in me rather effectively.
And not unjustified, I may add. At least when it comes to the simplest of repairs.

I wouldn’t really say it was a sign of his lack of confidence: since you already told him you couldn’t fix the toy, you had already disavowed any confidence he might have had. Therefore, it was a more a non-verbal way of saying "Out of my way, you ignoramus, I’ll show you how it’s done."
