Over the past month, three different people have told me that they had kept a secret from me, fearing that if I discovered their secret, I would have made fun of them.
These were not big secrets.
One person had begun teaching a class and hadn’t shared the details with me, assuming that I would find the subject worthy of amusement.
Another was watching a television show that she assumed I would find silly and trite.
A third had made a questionable parenting decision that she feared I might disparage.
Although two of the three people were correct in their assumption, why would they care if I made fun of them? Either they are overly concerned with my opinion of them or I am highly skilled at making fun of people.
I kind of hope that it’s both.
