Say the names

I was recently standing in a hospital lobby when I spotted a wall of plaques listing the hospital’s donors and the original executive team — about 100 names altogether.

While I stood there, I quietly read the names aloud.

I do this a lot.

When I find myself in a space with a plaque honoring people who have done something righteous, good, brave, or generous, I pause if I have time and read the names aloud.

Usually in a whisper, but still aloud.

I think it’s the least we can do.

I think plaques like this are often placed in public spaces — probably part of a dedication ceremony of some kind — and then they quickly become wallpaper.

Invisible to almost everyone.

But each name on these plaques represents effort, care, and toil from a human being. In this case, these plaques honored the founders of this hospital that cares for hundreds of people each week.

Untold numbers of patients over the years.

The people on the plaque helped make this happen, so quietly reading their names aloud feels like the least I can do.

Even better, it makes me feel good.

I recommend it to all.
