I took a walk from Windsor Castle down Eton’s High Street, across the Thames, to iconic Eton College.
It was a beautiful walk across the only footbridge that spans the Thames.
I spotted this sign along the way.
Eton Porny
It turns out to be exactly not what you’d think it would be:
Eton Porny is a small Church of England primary school serving children aged 4–9.
The unusual name comes from Mark Anthony Porny, a French teacher at Eton College. When he died in 1802, he left money to provide free schooling for poor local children, and the school was established using that bequest.
“Porny” was his adopted surname.
I love it when life plays tricks on me and delights me like this.
