The end of a great thing

I saw the closing performance of “The Counter” at TheaterWorks in Hartford yesterday.

If you didn’t see it, you really missed a fantastic play and fantastic performances.

Justis Bolding and Tim Dekay were especially outstanding.
Brilliant and bright and unforgettable.

A few thoughts about the show:

If you want to see excellent theater on a regular basis in the Hartford area, there is no better place than TheaterWorks. Elysha and I have been subscribers for five years, and we have loved nearly every show we’ve seen in that time.

Subscribe now. You won’t be disappointed.

TheaterWorks also couldn’t be more accommodating to your scheduling needs and any unexpected calendar changes.

It’s great people doing great work.

I had tears in my eyes at the end of the show yesterday, partly because of the emotional ending, but mostly because it was the closing show of the run. Having performed onstage in musicals, plays, and my own solo shows, I understand the heartache one feels at the final performance. My tears were primarily for the actors, who I watched stand before a sold-out audience and a standing ovation.

Ending a show can be a huge relief, but it’s also the end of something great and so ephemeral:

Mastery of a script.
Intense collaboration with peers.
An opportunity to publicly demonstrate your talent and expertise.
A nightly outpouring of emotion.

I always get a little weepy when I’m attending the final show.

Saddened for actors who will never do this thing in this way again.
Saddened by all that will never happen again.
Saddened by endings, which always always suck.

This show most certainly didn’t suck, but the fact that no one else will be able to see it certainly does.
