I told my students that I’ve never used an emoji.
They didn’t believe me. “Impossible!” one shouted.
But it’s true. I’ve never included an emoji in a text message ot email.
I like words better.
But last week, a friend sent me a message, and I pressed down on the message and gave him a “thumbs up” reaction.
“I can’t believe it,” he replied. “You used an emoji.”
“No, I didn’t,” I said, “That’s not an emoji. That’s a reaction to a test message. Inserting a thumbs-up atop a message is not an emoji.”
“Yes, it is,” he responded.
So I looked it up.
He was right. It’s technically an emoji.
So I must revise my declaration:
I’ve never used an emoji that wasn’t attached as a reaction to someone else’s text message.
How annoying.
