#TBT – My first! Also, I finally understand what the hashtag means.

There are moments in my life when I feel disconnected from pop culture.

  • My inability to name more than three television shows currently airing on traditional network television (NBC, ABC, CBS)
  • The fact that my three year-old son can identify songs on the top-40 radio station faster and more accurately than I can, even though I’m a wedding DJ and love music
  • My inability to pick Kim Kardashian or any of her clan out of a lineup

I actually take a little pride in this last one.

Also, my wife claims that I wouldn’t be able to pick her out of a lineup of brunettes either, which isn’t true but contains the ring of truth in terms of me and my general awareness of detail

Another example of my cultural blindness was my inability to explain the hashtag #TBT. I would see this hashtag from time to time on social media, almost always accompanied by a photo, but I had no idea what it meant, and frankly, it was never accompanied by something so compelling that I felt the urge to look it up.

But a couple weeks ago someone used the hashtag orally (which is always always always a bad idea), so I was forced to ask this meathead what he was talking about. He explained to me that #TBT stands for Throwback Thursday, an opportunity (excuse) to post old stuff to your social media accounts.

It wasn’t Thursday when the meathead spoke this hashtag aloud, though further research indicates that the hashtag is often used on days other than Thursday now.

So behold, my first #TBT, a photo of me and my crew members and friends, taken circa 1992 in a McDonald’s restaurant in Brockton, MA. If you’re aware of my biography, this is the McDonald’s where I worked while awaiting trial for grand larceny, and it’s also the McDonald’s where I was robbed and brutally tortured by gunmen.

Good times.
