- Spite
- A desire to impress my wife (and before that, the desire to impress girls)
- The fear of poverty
- The need to create something that will last beyond my lifetime
- The personal satisfaction that comes with success
But mostly it’s spite and the desire to impress my wife.

Spite? Really? You haven’t outgrown that?
Outgrown it? I’ve embraced it. And I was surprised to find that many people who responded to this post also listed spite as a motivator.
I may have not been fully awake and too blunt when I wrote that. What do mean you mean by spite and how do you use it as a motivator?
A friend tells me that no one can write a decent novel before the age of 40. I do so. Partially out of the spite that fuels me.
Despicable cowards attempt to ruin my career (long story). I forge ahead, realizing more and more success, while taking great pleasure in proving them wrong and knowing that my success annoys the hell out of them.
Spite.
